The 3 types of Disney Cruise Line ships, explained

The Oceaneers Club also offers a Marvel Super Hero Academy where kids can design (and virtually fly) in their own super suit. Like past Disney cruise ships, Disney Fantasy features a vintage aesthetic, leaning Art Nouveau in its public spaces and staterooms. Both Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream are a little bit larger than the Disney cruise ships that came before them.

Disney Cruise Ships

Disney's 24-year-old cruising arm, Disney Cruise Line, only operates five vessels — a small fraction of the number you'll find in the fleets of cruising's best-known brands. The world's two biggest cruise lines, Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise Line, by comparison, have 26 and 23 ships in their fleets, respectively. MSC Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line have 19 and 18 ships, respectively. Disney's Castaway Cay, or simply Castaway Cay, is a private island in the Bahamas which serves as an exclusive port for the Disney Cruise Line ships.

The third Disney ship ever, Disney Dream was Disney’s first foray into cruising after a long break following the debut of its first few ships. The prior two Disney ships launched in the 1990s, while Disney Dream didn’t come along until the 2010s. Disney Wish is Disney Cruise Line’s fifth ship and is the current “newest” ship that you could sail on as soon as tomorrow, if you were lucky enough to snag a ticket, ahead of Disney Treasure’s launch. While not many details have been released about this ship, the expectation is that the new ship will carry over all of the Disney fan-favorite elements that you can expect on other, similarly new ships. An overhaul of Disney Magic brought such cutting-edge features as the AquaDunk, a 37-foot-tall body slide that careens over the side of the vessel. An overhaul of Disney Wonder brought a new French Quarter Lounge with New Orleans-inspired live entertainment and drinks.

The 3 types of Disney Cruise Line ships, explained

This ocean liner-inspired ship debuted almost in tandem with its sister ship, Disney Wonder, but the two have very minute differences, in terms of both size and style. However, on both ships, you’ll find an intimate environment, classic theme-ing, lots of Disney fun and plenty of activities for both kids and adults alike. Disney’s second cruise ship, Disney Wonder, launched in 1999 and is sister ship to Disney Magic. Together, the two ships are the smallest of Disney’s cruise ships, at an intimate 83,000 GT, with just under 900 staterooms in total. Disney Wonder is a bit smaller than Disney Magic, but you won’t really notice that, the difference is so minimal. There are three rotational restaurants with royalty themes (and the staple Animator’s Palate restaurant that you’ll find on most of the older Disney cruise ships).

With every pull-down bunk and pull-out sofa filled, the capacity for both ships jumps to 2,713. While more than a decade older than the Dream-class ships and more than two decades older than Disney Wish, Disney's two Magic-class vessels still feel up to date, thanks to major makeovers in recent years. The Triton class is the shiny new thing at Disney Cruise Line, with the first vessel in the series (Disney Wish) having just arrived in July.

All of Disney Cruise Line's ships are officially registered in Nassau, Bahamas.[1] Disney Magic began operation July 30, 1998.[2] Disney Wonder began operation on August and were both built at Fincantieri shipyard, Italy. These approximately ton (the measurement of the two differ slightly) ships are 964 ft (294 m) long and 106 ft (32 m) wide. The ships each contain 875 staterooms[3] and are not identical in their design, with a lot of variations in interior design, restaurants, and entertainment venues. Both contain areas designed exclusively for various age groups, including children, teenagers, and adults. Current itineraries go to Alaska,[4] the Bahamas, the Caribbean, Australia and Europe, depending on the ship. The newer Disney Cruise ships were built in Meyer Werft Shipyard in Germany.

It is located near Great Abaco Island and was formerly known as Gorda Cay. In 1997, The Walt Disney Company purchased a 99-year land lease (through 2096) for the cay from the Bahamian government, giving the company substantial control over the island. Like both of the Dream-class ships mentioned above, Disney Wonder and Disney Magic do both feature that vintage ocean liner theme-ing, with decor and elements that hearken back to the 1910s and 1920s. Not much has been revealed about Disney Treasure just yet, but we have seen concept art of the ship’s Grand Hall atrium, which greets guests as they enter the ship. The three-floor atrium, complete with gilded statues of “Aladdin”’s titular character, Jasmine and the Magic Carpet, incorporates Middle Eastern and Asian architectural and artistic elements, for a truly magical vacation-worthy setting. However, while Disney Treasure is new in some ways, you might notice the similarities if you’ve already traveled on Disney Wish in the past. Disney Wish set sail in 2022, and Disney Treasure is the next in the same class. All these ships offer 1,254 guest rooms and are powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Checked out all the need-to-know details regarding all the Disney cruise ships above and still not sure which of these ships is your perfect fit? Since this ship did debut about three decades ago, it has received some upgrades since then. The largest overhaul took place in 2013, with the addition of water features and children’s areas, as well as upgrades to cabins, restaurants, public spaces and the spa. However, since even 2013 was a decade ago, other, smaller dry dock refurbishments have also taken place since 2013. While launching in the 1990s put Disney Cruise Line behind other family-centric lines that had launched decades earlier (like Carnival), Disney quickly caught up and brought with it lots of Disney magic fun, in the appropriately named Disney Magic.

Disney Cruise Line has negotiated with the Port Canaveral port authority in early 2009, extending their contract until 2022. Original owner Genting filed bankruptcy after ordering the ship but before the ship’s completion, allowing Disney to swoop in and snag the ship for a nice price. Currently named Global Dream, the former Genting ship will receive a new name and brand-new look before it sets sail for Disney in 2025. Disney Magic, for instance, is the ship that Disney sends to Europe every summer for itineraries that are all about exploring cities such as Barcelona and Rome (reached via the port of Civitavecchia, Italy).

At 140,000 tons, Disney Wish is only a tad bigger than Disney's last two new ships, Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy. But it has a whole new array of Disney wow on board, from a Star Wars-themed "hyperspace lounge" that offers a "window" view of passing starships to Marvel- and "Frozen"-themed restaurants. For instance, cruise giant Royal Caribbean has about five times more ships than Disney. But on a passenger capacity basis, based on double occupancy, Royal Caribbean is about 10 times larger than Disney Cruise Line. Disney had cruise ship designs drawn up by February 1994.[29] Disney Cruise Line in 1995 ordered Disney Magic and Disney Wonder from Fincantieri in Italy. The ship was built in two halves with the bow built at Fincatieri's Ancona shipyard and the stern at their Marghera shipyard.

The largest overhaul occurred in 2013, with smaller refurbishments occurring throughout the last decade. The stand-out, specialty features on this ship are nearly identical to those you’ll find on Disney Fantasy. There’s the AquaDuck water coaster and other, similar water features for families.
